The Rotary Foundation is the engine that drives the community and international service of Rotary, from the club level, district level, and international level. Members can contribute in many ways... one of these is by signing up for recurring monthly or quarterly donations (can be for as low as $10/month) through Rotary Direct at https://my.rotary.org/.

One of the biggest efforts of The Rotary Foundation is the eradication of polio worldwide. Our club contributes a speaker honorarium of $30 per week to PolioPlus. Members are also able to contribute individually, and can join the PolioPlus Society with a commitment to give $100/year to PolioPlus until polio is eradicated. And... stay tuned for more info about our exciting video being produced by the MoWest theater class about polio eradication.

Stories
Remembering Rotarian Hod Symes
Hod was born in March of 1933 in Littleton, New Hampshire, but his parents and family home were in Vermont, so we’ll go ahead and accede to his demands to call him a Vermonter. Hod attended 1 school building from grades K-12, before attempting to enter the Naval Academy and West Point, but being denied due to failing the physical. Instead, he settled on an obscure, little known school named Dartmouth and earned his degree.

Purple Pinkie Donuts 2026 Raises Over $1.2 Million for PolioPlus
The final results are in for the 2026 Purple Pinkie Polio Eradication Fundraiser, and I am thrilled to share that together we raised $1,200,788 for Rotary's End Polio Now campaign.

Every dollar will support the fight to eradicate polio worldwide. Thanks to the dedication of Rotary members, partners, and supporters, we are now down to just two endemic countries. The finish line is in sight.

Program Speaker:

St. Joseph Fire Chief Ivan Klippenstein

We were in for a treat today as our speaker was the fire chief!

Ivan has been with the department somewhere around 25 years and has been chief for a bit over a year.

The St. Joseph Fire Department operates 9 stations, with 11 engines. Did you know that brass fire poles first were used right here in St. Joseph?

In the past year, there were about 300 fire calls and 180 working fires. This is consistent with the past few decades.

There are a total of 124 working firemen in the department, and about 30 of them are new within the past 3 years. They work 24 hour shifts.

A new station, No. 10, is currently under construction in the South End.

The SJFD is also getting a new live fire training facility very soon, which should help with insurance rates for homeowners and businesses.
